Sukhkarta Dukhharta
Sukhkarta Dukhharta is the aarti to Ganesha sung across Maharashtra, and the one heard most during the ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Its opening words name what the deity is asked to do. Sukhkarta is the maker of happiness and Dukhharta the remover of sorrow, and the verses that follow describe Ganesha as devotees picture him — the form, the ornaments, the vermilion, and the affection of those who gather.
The aarti is attributed to Sant Ramdas, the seventeenth-century Marathi poet-saint who also composed the Dasbodh and who is closely associated with the devotional life of the Deccan. It is written in Marathi rather than Sanskrit, which is part of why it belongs so specifically to Maharashtra even as Ganesha is worshipped everywhere.
During Ganesh Chaturthi it is sung twice daily before household and public installations, and again at the immersion. It is also sung at the start of new work and at the beginning of ceremonies, since Ganesha is invoked first — the remover of obstacles is addressed before anything else begins.
